A Lea Gilmore Miniresidency features a full concert and for cosponsorship a choice of a mini-concert with an educational focus or a school assembly, or a specialized workshop/lecture, or educational sessions. Please see the list below. Lea Gilmore is also available for longer residencies.

"Soul of A People - African American Music Traditions - - Seeking Our Common Ground"

With excitement, passion, humor and joy, Lea and her pianist take you on a musical journey of the music of Black Americans. From Spirituals to Gospel and Blues to Jazz, African American music has greatly influenced music around the world. It has formed the foundations of popular music from New York to Tokyo. This is a presentation that personifies all of our common ground, transcending race and culture to convey our oneness – our common humanity. Lea successfully tells her musical stories with messages of tolerance, justice and peace that are inspirational to all. This presentation can generate cosponsorship from Multicultural and Diversity Centers, the Department of Music and the Department of History.

“That’s the Gospel!" Choir Workshops

With Lea on the piano, she spends up to three hours with school, university, community and church choirs to teach Gospel singing technique and singing with your heart and soul. At the end of the workshop, the choir will have performance ready Gospel songs.

“Beltin’ Boppin’ and Blues – Women in the Blues"

A survey encompassing the vast historical and contemporary contributions of women in blues music through the repertoire and lives of Classic Blues Women from the 1920s such as Bessie Smith, Gertrude “Ma” Rainey, Alberta Hunter; the soul and sass of Sister Rosetta Tharpe, Big Mama Thorton, Ruth Brown to the impact of women blues artist of today. Lea includes a mini-training on how to sing to blues with fervor and fun.

Lea also offers the following classes and workshops: “Singing from the Soul - Exploring Your Voice,” “Songs of the US Civil Rights Movement,” and “The Roots of African-American Music.”
