“There’s a little something for just about everybody in Si Kahn’s delightful little memoir, Creative Community Organizing, A Guide for Rabble-Rousers, Activists, and Quiet Lovers of Justice (San Francisco: Berrett-Koehler, May 2010). In the space of a couple of hours of reading, you can gain a front-row seat on history from the vantage-point of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee, one of the most militant elements in the civil rights struggle to the Mineworkers Union to the recent nationwide campaign to end immigrant family detention. You’ll learn about music and art and their central role in what Kahn calls “creative community organizing,” with folksong lyrics prefacing every chapter. You’ll learn about Si’s remarkable rabbi father and radical mother. You’ll even learn the meaning of the puzzling word “hod,” as in “hod carrier.”

There is only *one* Si Kahn. While I've always been impressed with the clarity and conviction of Si’s songs, it's the humanity of his performance that stays with you. We had the largest crowd of members for Si that we've had in about eight years. All thoroughly enjoyed his songs, gentle humor and message. It was a great final "Folkstage" of the year.

If "the arc of the moral universe bends towards justice", as Martin Luther King said, then Si Kahn has devoted his life to rising that arc. His powerful impulse to service, combined with deep compassion, is a force of nature. I put Si Kahn in the same category as Woody Guthrie, as Pete Seeger, and in a strange way, as my dad, who shard his righteous sense of humanity and his love of the"meek", who he truly believed would "inherit the earth."

Rosanne Cash, writer and musician

In a world rife with many talented songwriters, Si Kahn stands alone. And his deeply thoughtful, elegantly simple, sometimes majestic, often achingly moving and always hard-hitting songs have stood, and will continue to stand, the test of time.”
